This is a top-quality piece of Siberian woolly mammoth ivory (Mammuthus primigenius), taken from the very base of the tusk. The deep conical hollow is the tusk's original pulp cavity — the living chamber that sat concealed within the mammoth's skull and, over decades, built the ivory outwards layer upon layer. It is the one part of the tusk that was never visible during the animal's lifetime. The opposite, cross-cut end reveals the concentric growth cones of the dentine: the natural architecture of the ivory itself.
The ivory is rock-solid despite the cracks. The colour of the ivory is creme. The colour of the outer layer of bark is a mix of creme, caramel and brown, with fine darker veining running through the surface. Please carefully look at the pictures for precise dimensions.
Geological epoch: Pleistocene.
Age: Over 10,000 years.
Origin: Sakha Republic (Yakutia).
This natural mammoth ivory piece is not stabilised and / or filled with epoxy. Please note that none of our mammoth ivory is artificially stabilised and / or restored unless explicitly stated.
